* For D.C. and New York both syllables are stressed. This is the main difference between saying New York and Newark (a city in New Jersey). In New York both words are stressed, while in Newark only the first syllable is stressed. To say District of Columbia stress the bold print–however, people usually say D.C.
Stress the 4th syllable: Louisiana
Stress the bold print for these state names:
North Carolina, South Carolina, North Dakota, South Dakota, West Virginia
We stress both the directional word and a syllable in the main word.
