5 Conditional Sentence Structures
- Second Conditional (Hypothetical Personal Preferences)
- Structure: If + Past Simple, … would / could + Infinitive
- Example: “If I had more free time after my shift, I would join a local bouldering gym to unplug from screens.”
- Third Conditional (Reflecting on Past Hobby Choices)
- Structure: If + Past Perfect, … would have / could have + Past Participle
- Example: “If I had started learning acoustic guitar years ago, I would have built a much better habit of stepping away from my computer.”
- Softened Preference with “Would rather / Would prefer”
- Structure: I would rather + Infinitive … than + Infinitive
- Example: “After spending eight hours in Jira, I would rather do a physical activity like running than sit through another online course.”
- Mixed Conditional (Past Habit, Present State)
- Structure: If + Past Perfect, … would + Infinitive
- Example: “If I hadn’t picked up cooking during the pandemic, I would spend way too much money on food delivery during late-night deployments.”
- Polite Recommendation with “If you want to [goal], I would…”
- Structure: If you wanted to [goal], it would be best to + Infinitive
- Example: “If you wanted to relieve eye strain after coding all day, it would be a great idea to take up an outdoor activity like cycling.”
