Let’s practice using the conditional tense to express opinions on team performance.

5 Conditional Sentence Structures

  1. Second Conditional (Hypothetical Situations)
    • Structure: If + Past Simple, … would / could + Infinitive
    • Example: “If we automated our integration tests, we would reduce our deployment errors significantly.”
  2. Third Conditional (Past Regrets / Missed Opportunities)
    • Structure: If + Past Perfect, … would have / could have + Past Participle
    • Example: “If the team had prioritized refactoring, we would have avoided the severe technical debt in sprint 4.”
  3. Mixed Conditional (Past Action, Present Result)
    • Structure: If + Past Perfect, … would + Infinitive
    • Example: “If we had hired an extra DevOps engineer last month, our pipeline would run much faster today.”
  4. Polite Opinion with “I would say…” / “It would be…”
    • Structure: I / It would + Infinitive + [Opinion Statement]
    • Example: “I would say the development velocity could improve if we limited our work-in-progress tasks.”
  5. Softened Recommendation with “If I were…”
    • Structure: If I were [role], I would + Infinitive
    • Example: “If I were leading the frontend team, I would shift our focus to resolving visual regression bugs first.”
