The Prefix Semi

Pronunciation tips: the I in semi can be pronounced with a Long E as in need or a Long I as in fine
Both pronunciations are correct. In this course, we will use the Long E sound.
Usually, this prefix is not stressed. In the word “semicircle” below, do stress the first syllable (an exception). In all others, stress the root word in the appropriate place. For example, stress per in semipermanent and stress li in semi-political.

Answer the Questions

1. As a child, did you play any games in which you and your friends were arranged in a semicircle? Describe.

2. Are people organized in semicircles in some aspects of your work, for example at some meetings, presentations or conferences? Explain.

3. In the U.S., we often have semiformal events for young people. These are organized by high schools and universities. Do you have similar semiformal events in your country? 

4. What was the last semiformal event that you attended? Describe.

5. What is one aspect of your life that is semipermanent? Also, what is one aspect of your job that is semipermanent?

6. Do you consider yourself a semipolitical person? Why or why not? 

7. Describe one person you know who is semipolitical.

8. Describe one person, perhaps an author or an athlete, who is semi-popular. Is this person on a track toward greater popularity or not? Explain.

9. Have you ever bought jewelry with semiprecious stones? Also, do you have a favorite semiprecious stone? 

10. Think of three people, one who is irreligious, one who is semireligious, and one who is very religious. Describe their differences.
