New Words: the YU Sound

The Long U can sound like the OO sound in Food or Flute, but if often sounds like the YU sound in Cute and Music. There are some spelling patterns you can review in the diagram below, but as these are patterns, not rules, it’s best to memorize the words that have this sound.

Words with stress on the 2nd syllable: dispute, secure, immunity, manipulate, communicate, unique, refuse, continue, confused, confusing, commute, particular, spectacular, behavior, accumulate, vernacular, accuse, euphoria, unite

Words with stress on the 3rd syllable: use-ability, reputation, ambiguity, innuendo, speculation.

Use an S sound on the Noun: excuse

Use a Z sound on the Verb: excuse
