The Prefix Non

Pronunciation tips: Non is pronounced with the American Short O sound, as in hot. This is the same as the A sound in father
This prefix is usually not the stressed syllable in the word. However, we do emphasize this prefix. 
Note: The Short O sound is a long sound (with a short spelling). 

Answer the Questions

1. Are you nonchalant concerning your local community, politics, your family, or religion? Explain.

2. Describe someone who tends to be noncommittal in relationships.

3. Think of something you read that seemed like nonsense. Why would you describe it this way?

4. Has your country experienced a nonviolent political movement? If not, do you know of one that happened elsewhere?

5. Do you usually buy nonstop flights? Why or why not?

6. Describe an aspect of your life that is sometimes nonstop. It could be your work schedule, your family’s needs, your thoughts, etc.

7. What is one situation in which it is best to be judgmental and another when it is best to be nonjudgmental? Explain the differences in these situations.

8. In the U.S., nonconformity became popular in the 1960’s. Was there a similar movement in your country?

9. Do you believe in nonconformity generally? Why or why not?

10. Do you know someone who likes to blend in with others, so that the person prefers a nondescript appearance?
