New Words: the Short O Sound

The Short O is one of the keys to American English. My students often learn British English in school, and the O’s of British English are very different. Also, some of my students simply choose a middle sound for all O’s to make it easier. This is a common survival tactic for non-native speakers. But if you can get used to the American short O, which is very common, your pronunciation will become much more like a native speaker’s.

Pronounce this sound in the exact same way as the A in father. Drop your jaw and otherwise hold your mouth neutrally without tension. We call this the singing vowel because the mouth is open but loose, great for singing. Despite the name, it is a long sound, meaning we hold it out or emphasize it. Practice with the video here.
