
The Prefix Dis

Pronunciation tips: Pronounce dis with a short I sound, as in “is.” Try not to use an ee sound. One way to avoid that is to make the short I with a lower pitch. Also, make it more similar to u in up than to ee in see.
This prefix is usually not stressed.
Answer the Questions
1. Have you ever known anyone who is disabled? Describe this person.
2. Is there a group of people in your country that is disadvantaged? How or why did the people become disadvantaged?
3. Do you think governments should provide support to disadvantaged people? Explain your beliefs.
4. Have you been disappointed recently, i.e. by not reaching a project goal or achieving something you wanted?
5. Do you know anyone who tends to show disdain toward others? If not now, did you know anyone like this when you were young?
6. Did you see a look of dismay on someone’s face recently? What had happened?
7. Is there a new technological device (or one that may be launched soon) that makes you feel dismay?
8. Have you ever had a dog (or known about a dog) that was very disobedient? What kinds of things did it do?
9. Do you know of a circumstance in which one person disowned another? For example, sometimes people are disowned by their families because they have behaved in socially unacceptable ways.
10. Are there times when you prefer to be dispassionate? If so, when and why? If not, why not?
11. Describe a time when you tried to dissuade someone from doing something. Were you successful?
