
The Prefix BE
Pronunciation tips: BE is pronounced with a long E as in the insect, the bee.
However, when people speak quickly, they often reduce this long E to a schwa sound, the neutral sound u in up. Review the schwa sound diagram below.
Both pronunciations of BE are okay.
This prefix is usually not stressed.

Practice by Answering Questions
1. What factors drove you to become the person that you are today?
2. Do you have opportunities to befriend people often? Why or why not?
3. Was there a time when you befriended people more than you do now? Explain.

7. In families, older siblings sometimes belittle younger ones. At work, competitive colleagues will sometimes belittle their peers. Describe a time when you or someone you know was belittled.
8. What are the traditions concerning bereavement in your culture?
9. Do you feel besieged by work at a particular time of the year? If so, what is this time?
10. In your work, is it likely for one company to get besieged by other companies? If so, describe how this might happen.
11. Have you ever known a person who has betrayed a marriage partner or a peer at work? What happened?
12. We use the idiom between a rock and a hard place. This means in a very difficult situation–you have two choices, but neither one is an easy or positive solution. When was the last time that you were between a rock and a hard place?
